Skype is a popular tool for making video calls and chatting. With an additional subscription fee, Skype can also be used to call any phone with a phone number, including landlines, cell phones, and voice over IP phones (which can be considered LAN lines). With additional set up, Skype subscribers can also forward incoming calls to an existing phone number.
Set Up Your Skype Account
To create a Skype account, visit the Web site and click on "Join Skype" in the upper right corner. Fill out the form and click the "Continue" button. Download the Skype software and install it on your computer.
Log In to Your Skype Account
Click on the Skype icon to launch the software and log in to your account. You can now use the free voice and video chat functions available to all users. This is a good time to add users to your contacts and get to know the software. Skype has several options available including call forwarding and the ability to import contacts from your email.
Make a Phone Call
To make a call to any phone, click on "Call" in the upper menu, then choose "Call a Phone Number." A dial pad will appear on the right side of the screen. Enter the phone number you would like to call, then click the button on the right to connect.
In order to make phone calls with Skype, you will need to purchase call credits or pay a subscription fee. Make your choice using the buttons above the dial pad. Skype credits are available in increments of $10. Subscriptions are available starting at $2.99 per month.
