How Can I Secure My Linksys Wireless Router?

by Cooper Temple

As more and more computers, video game consoles and media players support wireless Internet access, the popularity of wireless routers and networks continues to grow. Wireless routers are convenient; however, they are vulnerable to intrusion unless you secure them. Securing your Linksys router is very important; a hacker who gains access to your router may then be able to gain access to your network and even your personal data.

Step 1

Open a new window in your Web browser. Type your Linksys router's IP address into the address bar and press the "Enter" key. The default IP address for Linksys wireless routers is "192.168.1.1."

Step 2

Type your user name and password into the appropriate fields in the pop-up window. Press the "Enter" key. If you have not created a user name and password, leave the username field blank and enter "admin" as the password.

Step 3

Click the "Wireless" tab and select the "Wireless Security." Select "WPA Personal" from the first drop-down menu. Select the "TKIP" option from the "Algorithms" drop-down menu.

Step 4

Enter a password into the "WPA Shared Key" field. Use this password on your wireless devices to connect to the Linksys router. Click "Save Settings" to secure your router.
