Owned by eBay, PayPal is an online financial account similar to a bank account that allows you to send and receive electronic funds. Due to its eBay affiliations, PayPal is used primarily for buying and selling through auctions. You link your bank savings or checking account to PayPal and the funds are automatically withdrawn through PayPal from the account that is linked. PayPal is a free financial service, but does charge those with a Premier or Business PayPal account a fee on every payment received.

General Account

To purchase an item online with PayPal, click the PayPal button and enter your log-in information to sign into PayPal. In PayPal, click "Buy." PayPal automatically transfers the money out of your account and to the seller. Check the website to see if they take PayPal; many websites do. If the website does not take PayPal, you can still purchase with a PayPal debit card or credit card.

PayPal Debit Card

In addition to online purchasing, PayPal offers a debit card. It is used in the same way as a debit card from your bank, in that it is linked to your account and is used for in-store purchases. Apply for a PayPal debit card from inside your PayPal account.

PayPal Credit Card

PayPal has a credit card called the PayPal Extras MasterCard. You can purchase products online at any retailer that accepts MasterCard or any in-store purchases. There are cash-back options and the credit card account becomes linked to your PayPal account. You can make PayPal credit card payments through your PayPal bank account.

PayPal Shopping Website

PayPal Shopping is an online merchant website where you can purchase goods from online retailers using your PayPal account. You can purchase the products at this website with a regular PayPal account, a PayPal debit card or a PayPal credit card.
