Lenovo (formerly IBM) ThinkCentre computers are Lenovo's line of desktop computers. With the advent of dual and quad core processors, or central processing units (CPUs), Lenovo has followed the industry standard to incorporate these specifications into its computers. Dual and quad core processors significantly increase computer processing speed, resulting in a more pleasant user experience.

What Is a Dual or Quad Core Processor?

A dual core processor is a CPU with two processors or "execution cores" integrated into one circuit. Each processor has its own cache and controller so each can function as efficiently as a single processor. Since the processors are linked, they can perform operations faster than a single processor can.

Quad core processors work the same way but with four execution cores integrated into one circuit. With this in mind, a ThinkCentre can have one CPU that acts like multiple CPUs.

Advantages of Multi-Core Processors

A multi-core processor has several advantages for users who would like to boost their computer multitasking capabilities. The front-side bus (FSB) connects the CPU to the system memory (RAM) and other components on the motherboard, allowing the operating system sufficient resources to handle intensive tasks in parallel, making multitasking more efficient.

Multitasking is the computer's ability to have more than one application open at a time. For instance, you may notice that when you have several programs open at once, such as a browser, a word processor, a media player and a photo editor, that there is a lag when you switch between programs. A multi-core processor divides these tasks between cores, cutting down or eliminating the lag. Because each core has its own cache and independent interface to the FSB, processing is more efficient.

Do You Need a Multi-Core Processor?

Multi-Core processors are ideal for users who do a lot of CPU-intensive tasks such as processing video or burning DVDs. These tasks are often "multithreaded," meaning they are designed to use multiple streams of instructions, or threads, to act concurrently within the same program.

Lenovo Models With Multi-Core Processors

Lenovo ThinkCentre M Series computers are available with multi-core processors. Some ThinkCentre A Series all-in-one computers are also available with multi-core processors. Both Intel and AMD processors are available, depending on the computer model you choose.
