Your iPod stores 500 to 40,000 songs, depending on the model. If you downloaded enough music from the iTunes Store to fill up that space, it would cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Fortunately, by using iTunes Software and the CD drive on your computer, it's easy to import your existing CD collection to your iPod. This not only creates a digital backup, but also ensures you've got the tunes to send to your player.

Ripping Your CDs to iTunes

Insert your CD into the optical drive on your computer. If iTunes doesn’t launch automatically when your computer starts reading your CD, open iTunes on your computer as you would open any other program.

If your computer is connected to the Internet, iTunes automatically finds the title, artist, song and album information for your CD, enabling you to search for it in multiple ways on your iPod and also in your iTunes library. If you’re not connected to the Internet, you can still get that information, but you have to add it manually.

When your computer starts to read the CD, the main window of iTunes displays album information for your CD. Next to the title of each song is a box; check the box or boxes next to the song or songs to import to iTunes. If you want the entire CD imported, check all the boxes.

In the bottom-right corner of the window, click the “Import” button. ITunes imports the selected songs from the CD to your computer. When it's finished, you can access the selected songs via your iTunes library.

Adding CDs to Your iPod

Once your CDs are added to your iTunes library, transfer them to your iPod. Use the cable supplied with your iPod and an available port on your computer. Connect the wider dock connector end of the cable to your iPod and the USB end of the cable to your computer.

When iTunes opens, click on the “Music” tab in the control panel located on the left-hand side of iTunes. This displays the music saved in your iTunes library, including the CD you just ripped.

When you find the song to upload to your iPod, click on it with your mouse and drag it to the iPod icon that appears in the “Device List." When the iPod icon appears highlighted, release the mouse and the song you selected copies to your iPod.

If you have multiple iPods, use the Automatic Download feature to send the songs automatically to your other devices. From the Settings app, select "Store" to set your iTunes preferences to automatic download.
