Website developers create pop-ups to display ads to users when they visit certain pages. These ad pop-ups are an annoyance for many users, so the makers of Web browsers have introduced pop-up blockers to stop them from appearing. The popular browsers such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox implement pop-up blockers. You can turn on these pop-up blockers to stop ads and other new windows from suddenly opening when you access websites.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer, click the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options." This opens a window where you set several configurations for the browser, including the pop-up blocker.

Step 2

Click "Pop-up Blocker."

Step 3

Select "Turn on Pop-up Blocker.

Firefox

Step 1

Open Mozilla Firefox, click the "Firefox" menu, select "Options" and choose "Options" from the menu that slides out.

Step 2

Click the "Content" tab at the top of the configuration window. Select the "Block pop-up windows" check box.

Step 3

Click "OK."

Google Chrome

Step 1

Click the "Wrench" icon at the top-right corner of the Chrome browser window and select "Settings.

Step 2

Click the "Show Advanced Settings" link at the bottom of the page.

Step 3

Under the Privacy section, click the "Content settings" button.

Step 4

Check the "Do no allow any site to show pop-ups (Recommended)" option.
