Whether it's news sites, blogs, social media or games, time-wasting websites can quickly suck the productivity out of your workday. Your workplace's network may already block some of these sites for you, but if you work at home or need to go above and beyond your boss's filters, you can remove your ability to access these sites with browser extensions for Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. By telling these free add-ons which sites to block and when, you'll free yourself from temptation and be able to concentrate on work.
Firefox
Step 1
Navigate to "Tools," "Add-ons" and "Get Add-ons" in Firefox.
Step 2
Search for "LeechBlock" in the Get Add-ons module. Alternatively, visit the LeechBlock installation Web page directly.
Step 3
Click "Add to Firefox" to install the add-on. Restart Firefox after the installation is complete.
Step 4
Navigate to "Tools," "LeechBlock" and "Options" to configure LeechBlock.
Step 5
Specify which sites you want to block at which times. You can also limit the total time spent on a site in 1 day, either in addition to or instead of blocking sites at specific times.
Chrome
Step 1
Navigate to the "Web Store" from the "New Tab" interface in Chrome.
Step 2
Search for and install the "Chrome Nanny" extension.
Step 3
Navigate to "Tools," "Extensions" and click "Options" for Chrome Nanny.
Step 4
Specify which sites you want to block and when to block them. As with LeechBlock, you can also use Chrome Nanny to limit total time spent on a site or set of sites per day.
