How to Add a Folder in the Mailbox on an iPhone

by Chad Anderson

The built-in iPhone Mail client does not have the capability to add or delete folders from inside the client. Instead, the Mail client reads a list of current folders provided by your email host and will allow you to transfer messages in and out of them, without allowing modification of the folders themselves. However, using the iPhone's Web browser you can log into the Web portal for your email account and add folders for use in the iPhone Mail client.

Step 1

Press the iPhone's hard button to return to the main screen. Tap the Safari icon to launch the Web browser, then tap the address bar.

Step 2

Type the URL of your Web-based email portal. Log in using your user name and password. Depending on whether or not your provider has a mobile interface, you may need to zoom in and move around the page to find further links.

Step 3

Tap the Folders link to open a list of your folders, then tap "Add Folder" or "New Folder" to create one. Enter a name for the folder, then tap the "OK" or "Save" button to finish.

Step 4

Log out of your Web-based email portal. Press the iPhone's hard button to return to the home screen. Tap the Mail icon and then tap the Refresh icon in the lower left portion of the screen. Your new folder will download with any additional messages.

Tip

  • If you use Google's Gmail service you will be unable to create folders, because Google's service is designed to work with tags instead.
