If your notebook computer is running sluggishly, adding more RAM is one of the best ways to speed up its performance. Adding more memory to a notebook computer will help it to boot up more quickly and that extra memory will also make your programs run more smoothly. Adding RAM to a notebook is not that much more difficult than adding memory to a desktop, but it is important to have the right tools on hand.

Step 1

Turn off your notebook and unplug it from the AC power. Turn the notebook over, locate the battery release lever and pull the battery out of the unit.

Step 2

Locate the screw covering the memory compartment and use your screwdriver to remove it. Depending on your notebook, you may need a small flat-head or Phillips-head screwdriver, so be sure to have both on hand.

Step 3

Place the screw in a butter container, cup or other receptacle, then remove the cover from the memory compartment.

Step 4

Slide the new memory module into the compartment and snap it into place. Make sure that the retaining clips are holding the memory securely.

Step 5

Replace the memory compartment cover and screw the cover back on. Slide the battery back into its slot, connect the AC power and turn your notebook on.
