From high speed Internet to cellphones, the technology from Verizon will keep you in touch with your friends and family. By using current technology, Verizon is able to offer many services online or on customers' phones. From detailed billing information to activating a cell phone, customers have access to Verizon services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Activating an old Verizon cell phone with your current number can be easily done on the Internet or by using your phone.

Step 1

Open the "Get it Now" folder in "Downloads" or where your apps are located. Download the Backup Assistant service for free and it will automatically update your contacts. To use this service online, log in to your Verizon account. On the navigation bar, click "My Services." Scroll through the drop down menu and click "Backup Assistant." Your contacts will be displayed if you have previously backed up your contacts.

Step 2

Remove the battery from your phone. Look at the label located on the back of the phone where the battery resided. Locate the 11-digit ESN number.

Step 3

Call Verizon at 888-294-6804 to begin the activation process. Enter your 10-digit mobile number. Tell the customer service representative you would like to activate a phone. Give the customer service representative the ESN number.

Step 4

Turn your currently activated phone off after you end the conversation with the Verizon customer service representative. Turn on the phone that will be activated. Dial "*228" to complete the activation. You're again prompted for your 10-digit mobile number. The call ends and your phone is rebooted.

Step 5

Turn your phone off before proceeding to enter details online. Go to Verizon's "Backup Your Contacts and Activate a New Phone" Web page or log in to your Verizon account. Enter your 10-digit mobile number with no spaces, billing zip code and ESN number in the spaces provided. Press "Continue" to complete the activation process. Be prepared to enter the last four digits of the account holder's social security number to verify identity. If you already have an account, simply click "Activate Device" and choose the phone number. Enter in your ESN number to complete the activation process.

Tip

  • Charge the battery so it doesn't die during the process.

Warning

  • Old Verizon phones can only be used with Verizon services because they don't have SIM cards like other wireless providers.
