Apple periodically updates and upgrades its software for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad --- all of which use iOS, Apple's proprietary mobile operating system. The upgrade activation process is transmitted through the iTunes software. At the beginning of 2011, the iPhone was running on iOS 4.2 (the fourth version, second iteration) of iOS. Any Apple device running iOS 2 or later could freely update --- and effectively upgrade --- its software through iTunes.

Step 1

Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB dock connector that came with the phone.

Step 2

Open iTunes if it is not open already.

Step 3

Wait for iTunes to recognize the presence of your iPhone and display its name in the left menu panel.

Step 4

Click "Install Update" if and when iTunes automatically displays a message notifying you of an available update.

Step 5

Wait until iTunes displays a message stating that the update is complete.

Step 6

Disconnect the iPhone.

Tip

  • Sync your iPhone frequently to stay abreast of the latest iPhone updates and upgrades.
